Massage for Children

At the Balance Project we understand that in today's fast-paced, busy scheduled and digitally dominated world, our children's delicate nervous systems can quickly become inundated and out of balance.

This can lead to over-activation of the sympathetic nervous system, commonly known as the "fight or flight" response and consequently, heightened stress levels may arise, leading to fluctuations in behaviour and learning, increased anxiety, and heightened sensitivities.

Kayla and Carli have collaboratively developed an affordable, child friendly massage specifically tailored for children between the ages of 2 and 12 to assist with the following:

Stress Reduction: Children, like adults, can experience stress from various sources such as school, extracurricular activities, and social pressures. Massage therapy has been shown to reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol in both children and adults, promoting a sense of relaxation and calmness.

Improved Nervous System Function: Massage stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body's "rest and digest" response. By activating this system, massage helps to counterbalance the effects of the sympathetic nervous system, which is often overactive in times of stress. This can lead to improved overall nervous system function and regulation.

Enhanced Mood and Emotional Well-Being: Massage therapy has been associated with improved mood and emotional well-being in children. The release of endorphins and serotonin during massage can promote feelings of happiness and relaxation, reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Better Sleep Quality: Many children struggle with sleep issues, whether it's difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or experiencing restless nights. Massage therapy has been shown to promote better sleep quality by inducing a state of relaxation and reducing muscle tension, making it easier for children to drift off to sleep and stay asleep throughout the night.

Reduced Hyperactivity and ADHD Symptoms: For children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or hyperactivity issues, massage therapy can be particularly beneficial. Research has shown that regular massage sessions can help reduce hyperactive behavior, improve attention span, and enhance self-regulation skills in children with ADHD.

Enhanced Body Awareness and Sensory Integration: Massage therapy can help children develop a greater awareness of their bodies and improve sensory integration skills. Through gentle touch and manipulation of muscles and joints, children can become more attuned to their physical sensations, leading to better coordination and proprioception.

Improved Behavior and Self-Regulation: By promoting relaxation and reducing stress, massage therapy can have a positive impact on children's behavior and self-regulation skills. Children who receive regular massages may exhibit fewer disruptive behaviours, better impulse control, and improved emotional regulation, making it easier for them to cope with daily challenges

By incorporating massage therapy into our children's routines, we can provide much-needed relief from the pressures and demands of modern life. By supporting nervous system function, behaviour, and emotional regulation, our massage session offers holistic benefits that promote balance, resilience, and overall well-being for children- our future generations.
